The area around Bada Guan, close to the No. 2 Bathing Beach, is the former German residential area, meaning "eight passes." Bada Guan now sports ten streets line with 100Western villas. On the south slope of the hill is a massive German villa. The magnificently built mansion was the former residence of the German governor and the entire estate covers 26,000m2. No extravagance was spared in its construction much of the construction material was shipped from Europe –the governor felt he deserved the utmost in luxury. Unfortunately for him when the Kaiser saw the construction bill, the hapless governor was immediately recalled.

Qingdao was little more than a fishing village in a scenic bay before the end of the 19th century. By 1891, the Manchu Qing Dynasty had decided to exploit the bay's strategic position and turn it into a naval base, but the tragic farce of the Boxer Rebellion unleashed a series of events that would deliver Qingdao to the Germans, eager for a stake in East Asia.

The Qingdao International Beer Festival is held every year in the mid-August for ten days. Look for it at the Qingdao International Beer City on Xianggang Dong Lu. During the beer festival, there's lots of live entertainment and beer drinking. Tickets are about RMB 20, not including beer.

The area of Qingdao city is 10,654 square kilometers, among of which the area of downtown is 1,202 square kilometers. The population of the city is 2.24 million.
